The Awakened in Washington

Not every supernatural inhabitant of the capital is Kindred. Among its universities, archives, houses of worship, artistic circles and laboratories are people whose abilities challenge conventional understandings of reality. Some call themselves mages or the Awakened.

The Council of Nine Mystic Traditions

The Traditions are an alliance of mystical and philosophical schools, historically opposed to the Technocratic Union. They are neither a single religion nor a unified government. In Washington, they are believed to work through scattered circles and private networks.

Other Awakened do not belong to these nine schools. Hollow Ones, independent Crafts and solitary Orphans follow their own paths.

Washington's occult circles

The capital's political institutions, historical collections, universities and multicultural communities attract occult scholars and supernatural practitioners. Rumors concern private occult libraries, unorthodox research, religious mystics and spiritual societies. Their affiliations and goals are rarely obvious to outsiders.

The Technocracy is the Traditions' historic adversary. Both groups keep most of their activities out of public view, and neither should be mistaken for a single, unified organization.

What Kindred may know

Kindred familiar with occult affairs might recognize the Traditions by name, recall that the Order of Hermes has a hostile history with the Tremere, or know that some mages deal with spirits or the dead. Even an educated vampire will rarely understand an Awakened practitioner's methods, allegiances or capabilities.
